VisCorp to get tough on Amiga clone makers?
In a recent announcement on the VisCorp webpage
, VisCorp have announced that they will get tough with
companies and individuals who try to produce Amiga-compatible
computers, or in any other way use Amiga patent technology or
copyrighted ROM code without licencing the material from VisCorp.
This is obviously aimed at Phase 5 (www.phase5.de) who have announced
their recent Amiga clone computer will not use an official Amiga
Kickstart, but will contain new code developed entirely by Phase 5.
This announcement may also be seen as a warning against people trying
to commercially distribute the popular UAE (Universal Amiga Emulator)
system, which given an Amiga ROM image file, will emulate an Amiga
500 on a PC, Macintosh or various other desktop systems. While it is
unlikely that VisCorp are concerned about UAE being distributed as a
public domain program for private individual use, they would almost
certainly be very angry should someone attempt to sell UAE as a
commercial package, especially with unlicenced Amiga ROM images.
